Messrs Beat d, Skipper, Parker and Gawitb, on behalf of the Bar, expressed theiresteem for Mr "Wardi'll •who m the course of his vemiu ks said : :«Ifr is thirty years since J was first appointed to the Bench, and twenty five years Since I first sat m the Wairarapa. Twenty -fi ve years m the life of a man, *«•' all events when he starts at thirty, takes the best part out of him. I have watched the growth of the Wairarapa, and 1 may say t have grown with it.' It often pleases me to look back at the Wairarapa as it was iv roy young- days, lv the early time, when I bad. .-niy first appointment here the country, ■was somewhat rough and somewhat crude, and one had to undergo a good deal of hardship and discomfort, which m thc^e later years he is not called upon to experi«nce. When I call to mind how my early sittings were conducted, how the <schnolhou.se had to be, converted into a courthouse, when I romemWr that iii this township thelittle.annexe to the temperance hall had to do duty; when I look around me -and ses thp men thnt I knew, as youths; when T We tha chatiseH that have taken place ; vilhigeTgrown into townships, children into manhood— l fee) Hko one who has worked and grown with the progress of the place, and who has become indehtified and associated with its history. If I have done anything to promote the good fellowship and kindly feeling that characterises the community, I can only pay that I feel myself amply rewarded. Thirty years "ago I swore to do right to all manner of people, without favour or affection, malice or ill-will, and my conscience is satisfied on this point, that I have done my duty."
