DEFENCE OPERATIONS.
(UNITED P;«E.«8 ASSOCIATION.! Auckland, April 20. Major Cautley to-day inspected the fortifications at North Head, and was highly pleased at the energetic manner m which Messrs Bell and Vickerman have carried out the duties confided to them. Major Cautley, m company with Mr Smythe and Captain Douglas, will inspect all approaches to the Auckland Harbor with the view of deciding upon plans of submarine mines. According to present programme, Major Cautley and his coadjutors will spend three days m Auckland, and then leave by tlae Hinemoa for the Bay of Islands, his Excellency the Governor having expressed a desire that a report should be furnished to him concerning the advisability of placing a lma of mines across the entrance of the Bay Harbor. The Great Barrier Island and "Whangarei Harbor will bo visited, Major Cautley being desirous of reporting on the chances of these unprotected harbors being used J by hostile cruisers. ■ ■ I
