IN MEMORIAM OF GENERAL GORDON.
The London Morning Post lately published the following spirited verses : — There are times m the story of nations there are hours m the life of the land, "When the hand of each clansman is seeking the grip of his countryman's hand. No matter who blundered— no matter if this chief or that chief may fall, We are partisans ifter, my brothers, we are Englishmen foremost of all. Through the long, snltry months we have waited and watched with infinite pride One man who was fighting a nationone will that was stemming a tide ; And high o'er the hurtle of battle there gleamed, fleckted with blood as with foam, . One sword that was striking for England—one sword that was striking for home. It is down— is he slain, is he taken? God knows— but our duty to-day Is to cut our way clear to our comrade,' no matter the odds m our way. ghall we huckster for costs ? Shall we wrangle, with the brand of his foe m our face, O'er your pitiful tussles of party, your pitiful struggles for place?
" Atlas " m the World writes : — It is, I helieve, perfectly true that the wife ofthe General commanding on the Nile first heard the news ot the fall of Khartoum from — a crossing-sweeper. Lady Wolseley on Thursday morning was out for her ussal walk, and, crossing Grosvenor Square, was saluted by the sweeper, to whom she was known, with " Very sorry for this bad news, my lady.". " "What bad new.s ?" " This about Khartoum being taken." "Absurd!" said Lady Wolseley: ""Where did you hear such nonsense ?" "It ain't nonsense ! I took ia, letter from a house here to Marlborough House just now, and the porter there was reading it out of the Telegrn.2>h." Lady "Wolseley returned home, 'and an hour later received a despatch from the War Office.
