Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. FRIDAY, APRIL 17, 1885. RAILWAY MANAGEMENT.

A few issues ago we referred to the advisability of lowering still further the charges on white pine timber for export as an essential feature of railway reform. With regard to the carriage on live stock we learn from the Oaniaru Mail that the farmers are grumbling at having to pay more for (he conveyance of three head than for seven head. That is to say, for a truck load or seven head the charge ia £3 9s 3d, while for three head it is £3 18s 7d. It may be urged that anyone desiring to secure the conveyance of three animals, would, under the circumstances, be shrewd enough to take a truck. But shrewdness, however keen, would be useless if unaccompanied by an exact knowledge of the intricacies of the tariff, which, we venture to say are nnknown to the majority of pur faraiers. In Hawke's Bay the Telegraph asserts that the charges for the carnage of sheep are so high that no one will uae the railway if it can lm< avoided, and the only excuse offered for this prohibitive tariff is that if it were lowered here it would have to be lowered m the Waikato ! "Who shall say that after this our railways ought not to be managed by local boards? We hope and trust that Mr Yaile's agitation will produce results m the shape of needed reforms, for the sake of the prosperity of the country an ranch as m order that onr railways may pay a reasonable return on their cost which now they do not.
