Judge O'Brien to day opened tho Native Land Court which now stands adjourned till Monday. A most enjoyable and pleasant inaugural assembly ball took place m the Town Hall last evening, breaking up about 2 this morning, some 30 couple besides a number of non-dancers, these latter enjoying themselves quite as much m their adjoining rooms, where whist and other games were indulged m. Mrs Lambert was at the piano and gave universal satisfaction. We believe it is intended to hold short assemblies at the Bank Chambers chiefly for practice, and give monthly entertainments similar to that of last evening. Several of those who attended amongst whom were our business people expressed their entire satisfaction with all the arrangements which were remarkable for their completeness. The gathering on the whole was most successful every one evidently thoroughly enjoying themselves. Writes the Waipawa Mail is connection with the receent Palmeraton poll : — "We must give Palmereton credit for heine one of the most energetic and enterprising to\vi»s m the North Island, and wish their scheme success."
