(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, April 16. Robert McElvie, a seaman, shot Thos. Stewart this evening m the jaw and left breast with a revolver while the latter was sitting talking m Mrs Benson's boardinghouse with the landlady. Tim cause was jealousy. McElvie escaped, and has not yet been nrrested. Stewart was taken to the hospital, and one of tho bullets extracted. He is likfily to recover. McElvie formerly lived with Mrs Benson, and had previously threatened her and Stewart. Woodville, This Day. The Hon. Mr Tole, Minister of Justice passed through here last night on his way to Wellington via Masterton.
We hear that Rome of the leading citizens of Foxton have placed themselves m communication with the Defence Minister suggesting that protective works be constructed without loss of time. The block to be dealt with by the Native Land Court is the Mangatinoko Block, not Manawatu Block as appeared m last issue. Mr Gardes' fruit display is being well patronized and we are glad to notice he is doing a brisk trade. A number of new advertisements appear m our Wanted column. Father McManus had a narrow escape from severe injury through being thrown from his horse when m Foxton on Monday last. Fortunately no bones were broken and further than some nasty cuts and bruises, the rev. genleman is not much the worse lor the accident. Messrs Snelson and Co. announce 8 great drapery and grocery auotiou sale to take place on Saturday and Monday next, commencing each day at 2 p.m. Signor Hug can be consulted nil day to-morrow m Foxton. On Monday he proceeds to Otaki, where he will remain till Tuesday morning. Signor Hug will revisit this district m about six months' time, ou his return from a professional tour m the South Island. The ninth annual meeting of the Manawatu Permanent Equitable Building and Investment Society was held at the Town Hall this afternoon. The report was presented, also balance sheet.
