Mr Wardell, the Wellington R.M., is to hold quarterly sittings at Otaki, which will be a source of satisfaction to the residents. There will be a meeting of the Borough Council this evening. The B.M. Court sits to-morrow. A man named John Morford has been committed for trial at Foxton to the Pahnerston District Court on a charge of perjury. This is the only ease so far as we know. The charge is for having sworn that a certain . entry m a book was made at a certain time and m the presence of a certain witness, which statement is alleged to be untrue. The Horowhenua County Council has voted 2s per head for all dogs destroyed, to be paid on production of the right paw of the animal destroyed. Mr F. Loudon's lecture m Wanganui on Life Insurance was well received and applauded. The Wanganui City Rifles have offered their services to the Government, m the event of war. We notice Mr A. Ferguson has returned from a brief holiday trip to New Plymouth and Waitara which proved very enjoyable. Mr Michael Davitt, who is now on the Continent, is not happy, it would appear, on his travels ; for at Rome, the English community m the hotel would not sit down to dinner with him. After a strong representation from the landlord, Mr Davitt changed his hostelry. It is a very remarkable coincidence that hardly had the Ruapehu boeu safely floated off the mud-bank on which she had grounded m Wellington harbour ou Saturday afternoon when the direct steamer of the rival line, the s.s. Tainui, stuck fast m Lyttelton inner harbour, and remained iinmoveable for about a quarter of an hour, after which she floated off without nssistance. It is uncertain if there is to be any demonstration «t Marton on occasion of turning first sod of central railway. Last cable from Agent-General is as follows : — "Affairs m Russia still grave." No mention is made of prosecuting defences. Ministers nre to assemble shortly to fix date of opeuiug Parliament. We (Star) l^arn with regret that H. L. Sherwill, Esq., has resigned his position as Mayor of the Borough of Feilding. A general meeting of the Feilding Small Farm Association is called for Monday next.
