The infant child of Mr Wood, schoolmaster at Ohaeawai, has been poisoned through the eating of matches. At the amateur athletic sports 3000 persons -were present. The ten mile bicycle race for the championship of New Zealand was won by J. A. Stewart, F. Llewellyn being secondhand J. Fifton third. Time, 40min 21sec. For the three mile bicycle race there was an exciting finish between the champien and Ashton, the latter winning by five yards. Time, llfmin. April 12. A fire occurred at Levette's marble works at Mechanics 1 Bay, by which the works were gutted. The authorities will largely increase the working parties on the harbour defences to-morrow. This Day. A scene occurred at the distribution of prizes at the Ponsonby Regatta. Raymouth, City Councillor, had won the Cup but threw it on the floor and trod on it because it was not silver. The Provincial Grand Master of the Irish Constitution of Freemasons, G. P. Pierce, received a reply from the Prince of Wales to a congratulatory telegram . sent last week to the Grand Lodge of Dublin upon his visit to Ireland. His Royal Highness thanks the Provincial Grand Master most sincerely for the telegram and for the good wishes contained therein. jJJew Plymouth, April 11. Mr Holdsworth, chief postmaster here had his private residence at Westown burnt to the ground last night at about 11 o'clock. The family escaped with difficulty. Wellington, April 11. The Ruapehu, which floated off this afternoon, has not sustained any injury. She has a quantity of frozen mutton to take m here, and it is hoped to get her (*way for London on Monday night. The Paroa Riding election, which has recently been upset, was contested again on Saturday by the same two candidates, when Mr Guineas, member for the district, was returned by a larger majority than on the previous occasion. So far as the returns are m majority is 45 or more. Chbistchurch, April 12. The body of a new-born female child much decomposed, was found m Avon, near the cemetery, yesterday evening. The police have not yet ascertained how it came there. At 2.30 a.m. to-day a fire occurred at A. Dallas and Go's auctioneer and furniture dealers. The building, which belonged to the widow of the late Isßftc Tuck, was gutted, but most of Dallns's stock was saved. The Minister for Defence has accepted the sprvices of the mounted Infantry for Clirisichurch and Lyttelton. Dune din, April !2. A shoemaker named Paterson is missing at Balclutlm ; bis -two carpet hags and his hat have been fonnd on the river bank, and it is believed that he has been drowned. Large accessions have been made to the ranks of Volunteers during the pnßt day or two, and an "Otago trained band 1 ' is proposed to be formed of mon who have been members of any disciplined force. Blenheim, This Day. Professor Kirk is now m this district inspecting tho foiwta on behalf of the
Government with a view to adopting a plan for their conservation. He will shortly inspect the North Island. At the inquest on Henry McKenzie wlio was killed on Saturday whilst falling a tree, a verdict of accidental death was returned.
