Ruapehu Aground.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.") Wellington April 10. While the Ruapohu was being brought up to the wharf Pilot Sims, who was m charge, hugged the shore too close, with the result that the steamer grounded close to the Te Aro Baths, it being high tide -at the time. The engines were reversed, and sail set, but as the steamer did not move, the Union Company's Tarawera was sent to render assistance, but was unable to move her. The Ruapehu remained fast all the afternoon, and towards evening the freezing hulk was taken alongside and a portion of her cargo, consisting of 1000 carcases, is to be taken out of the forehold. She is not likely to have sustained any damage, as there is a sandy bottom, but divers have been sent down to examine the hull. A preliminary inquiry into the grounding of the Ruapehu was held this afternoon. The pilot m his evidence admitted that all his orders were promptly carried out, and that he hugged the shore too close, and that he was alone to blame m the matter. 1 This Day. All attempts to float the Ruapehu on laHt night's tide failed; Tim cargo is being taken out, nnd on midday's tide another attempt will be mndo m which the steamers, Hinemoa and Graf ton, will assist. Lateb. Steamers Grafton and Hinenioa Imvo I just succeeded m towing the Ruapehu off into deep water.
