The Dunedin Cruelty to Children Cases.
(UNITED PRKSS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, April 9. Alexander Fleming was acquitted of child beating. . . In sentencing Carrie . Fleming, his Honor said to prisoner :•—" I am unable to agree witli the suggestion of your ■ counsel, that m flogging these poor ehildien you acted from an «rror of judgement unly. In the contrary, it seems to me from the depositions, and what 1 have heard to-day, that yonr conduct evinces that you were actuated by a cruel mind, and it is forlnnnte that charitable neighbours intefercd and tried to stop your proceedings. There is no doubt that both the boy and the little girl received gross ill treatment at your hands, ill-treatment which appears to me-to be altogether without justification. Standing m the position which yon do to them it >vbs your special duty to treat them with kindness." Prisoner, who was greatly affected, was then sentenced to three years' imprisonment.
