Ascent of Mount Egmont.

SERIOUS ACCIDENT TO A TOUR. IST.

[Wanganui Herald] . Taking advantage of. the Easter holidays, several parties from Wangaiiui went by train to New Plymouth last' week with the object of ascending Mount E<rmont, this being the most favorable time of the year for the purpose. Among those who went was a young gentleman named Burns, of the Government .Insur-" ance Department here. It seems that on Saturday the party he was with made the ascent of the mountain successfully, and had started back about midday, whon Mr Burns, while sliding down a snowdrift, lbat his footing, and was thrown violently for a considerable distance down a rocky and precipitous sloped When the others of his party reached him they found him severely injured, he having struck his head against the rocks m the descent, and sustained a aeriou3 scalp wound, and was cut and brqised about the shoulders and legs. His escape from instant death was little short of miraculous. After a short delay, and the application of restoratives, Mr Burns was assisted down the mountain to a camp, which was reached just before dark. One of the party at once pushed on to the main camp for assistance; and by the help ot the members of another party of men from New Plymouth who happened fortunately to be there, Mr Burns was placed on an impromptu litter, and carried down the rest of the way to the main camp, where he received every attention. Yesterday we believe, a party of men were employed to carry Mr Bums into New Plymouth which would be a labor of some difficulty several miles of the first part of the journey being over a rough and precipitous "country. His injuries though very severe are not thought to be dangerous to life, but it will be some little time before he has sufficiently recovered his involuntary snow slide to resume his official duties. Fortunately, before leaving Wanganui Mi- Burns had invested m an accident insurance policy, from which he will rio doubt be reimbursed his medical expenses while laid up.
