The Australian and New Zealand mails, which reached San Francisco on the 22nd February were put aboard the fast steamer Britannia m New York on the 28th, reached London on the 9th March, making the voyage m thirty- : eight days, the ordinary time being j forty-two days. '' ■* - ! Sullivan, the American champion { pugilist, is preparing for. an Australian | trip. I Mrs Sydney Brown, of New York, has | been acknowledged by the Court of i Queen's Bench m England,- as the | heiress of the Townley Estate, value .£20,000,000. The. Cartridge Company, Bridgeport, received, on March 6, an order from the British Government for 50,000,000 cartridges, and another from Russia for 100,000,000. These are the largest orders ever received m the United States. Russia has made proposals for the purchase of transports, m New York. General Grant sufferers from cancer m the tongue which is attributed to the excessive use of tobacco. Congress con-' firmed his appointment on the retired . army list m full pay. The proposed discontinuance of the coinage of silver m the United States causes much excitement, as four-fifths of the silver mines would be obliged to stop. The ocean steamers Clandon for Leith and Preston and Fernwood, for Avonmouth, were reported lost m the January gales, with all aboard. The steamer Alleghanny, from Cardiff for Galle, is also reported lost, and the crew of 30 persons drowned. Cyrus Field, the cable manager, is suing Mr Labouchere, James Gordon Bennett, and his London agent, Hall, for libel. There was great excitement along the borders of Canada on February 25, caused by the published statement that 30,000 Irish revolutionists intended invading the Dominion. Application has been made by the British .military authorities ' to the directors of the Canadian-Pacific railroad to learn the earliest date the railway, will be completed, so as to- take, troops en route to India. The construction of the railroad has basn stopped owing to the financial straits of the syndicate. President Barrios, of Guatemala, issued a decree on Maroh 9 proclaiming a confederation of all the Central American States under one Government, with himself R3 military dictator. Honduras accepted, but San Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica rejected, and commenced active hostilities. The President of Moxico also intervened by sending a forco agaiusi Guatemala's pretensions. Troops are moving m every direction. War is likely to be general all over Central America. Trade relations between San Francisco, and the Republics is not disturbed. The Nicaragua Senate unanimously endorsed the treaty with the United States.
