Death of Rev. James Cumming.

We (Lyttelton Times) regret to announce the death ol the Rev. James Cumming, Inspector of Schools for the North Canterbury district, who died last week at Dnnedini while on a visit to that city. Mr- Cumming was a native of - Aberdeensbire, and a student of Aberdeen University. It was m 1865 that he arrived m Wellington, and very soon after landing took charge of the Presbyterian con--gi-egation at Bulls, Ramritikei. In that disttict he resided about six years, and there he married, his wife being a daughter of Mr Matthew Hammond, a ■well-known settler on the West Coast. Mr Cumming served his connection with • Bulls, about 1872, and came down to Christchuroh. There he received the head mastership of the West Christchurch school. The ability with which he discharged his scholastic duties led the Board of Education to give him the appointment of Inspector of Schools for North Canterbury, which appointment he has held for several years. The body of the deceased gentleman was brought up from Dunedin by tram, and i the funeral took place on Saturday. Mr Cumraing has been ailing' for some con- ■ siderable time before his doath, and had - -very much altered m appearance ot late.
