From Clerk of Licensing Committee applying for salary (£10) m accordance witli recominendatien of Committee. Grantfid. From the Treasury remitting £23 18s 3d, being rates on Crown Lands during years 1884 -1885, which had j been placed to the Borough Account m i Bank of New Zealand. j From Secretary of Roard Board uirecting attention to willows lately removed/ from Kawau creek, which were growing as vigorously as ever. Dealt with m Public Works Committee report. From Mr J. H Hankins, on behalf of Manz and others complaining of overflow of water m Fitzherbart-sfcreet iv consequence of an insufficient culvert. The letter stated that if the complaint was not seen to, redress would be sought m a court of law, as personal representations had hitherto beeu of no avail. From W. G. Leigh, objecting to pay last year's rates, m consequence of having sustained damages through water .injuring his fruit-trees and foundation of a chimney to the amount of £10. .In. reference to complaint of Manz and .others it was resolved to reply to the effect that the matter would be' attended to at the earliest possible date, it being understood that this with other urgent works was to be taken iv hand with other drniuage works immediately the loan was floated, as part of the general scheme. i?e Mr Leigh's complaint, resolved that he be communicated with, to the effect that m view of a general scheme of^draiwage within the Borough being* about to be inaugurated, and iv consideration of the uatural position of the land referred to, that his request cannot be complied with. PUBLIC WORK'S REPORT. The committee had considered the matter of the Pound Board, aud finding the board answered all the requirements of the Act, that the account for same be paid. The committee had also considered the matter of the claim objected to by the Road Board for removing willows from the Kawau creek, and that they did not see any reason for making a reduction m the account, and would re- 1 -commend that the Council communicate the same to the Road Board. Resolved — That the account for the Pound Boaid be paid, and that the Road Board be written to m conformity with the recommendation of the committee re the claim for clearing the Kawau creek, and that- the Council expresses its regret at learning that the willows have commenced to grow again. 1 MISCELLANEOUS. Mr.McNeil waited on the Board to request certain alterations to culverts m Botanical Road and Main-street, m one J case a lowering to be effected, and m another a culvert to be angled. Referred to Public Works Committee. Cr Larcomb complained of the occasional absence of the pounkeeper, which caused inconvience to those seeking to release or impound cattle. He suggested that he should be m attendance during an hour say about midday. Some discussion ensued, m which the Mayor remarked that the Council had done a great 'deal m the past to make the pound "interesting" to the public. This complaint had emanated from a man who had to pay 7s 6d for a steer only worth 10s. Anyone coming to the pound. was' more or less excited, the same as a man getting fined at the police court, and was ready to have a kick at the poundkeeper, the Town Clerk, the Borough Council, the Mayor, or anybody ■else. SeveralCrs spoke to the indefatigable manner m which the ; poundkeeper discharged his duties, Cr Grace saying that no had heard of his having gone as far as Awahuri m order to ascertain the ownership of impounded stock. Cr Larcomb proposed and Cr Grace seconded— That the poundkeeper ettend . at the pound from 12 to 1 daily, except on Sundays or when there are' no cattle impounded .--Carried. Cr Larcouab moved the resolution standing m his name notice to move which had been given at a previous meeting, viz. :— Cr Larcouab to move that the resolution that the work m Terrace street be not done passed at a Council meeting held Dec. 17, 1884,, be rescinded so that the resolution passed at a meeting held Feb. 18, 1885 referring the matter.to the Public Works Committee with power to act may b,e acted on. Carried. Gr Larcomb suggested holding the meetings less frequently than at present, say once a month until the loan 1 scheme was definitely inaugurated. Cr Hawkins preferred the present system to remain, at least until the loan was fairly under way. Cr T. King was of the same opinion. It was difficult to say how soon matters of importance might ootne before the Council, and it was better, m htsopimon, to hold the meetings fortnightly,, at any rate for the present, . ;. The Mayor thought that the business could be got on as well once a month as once a fortnight. He thought possibly > it would be as well to remain as at prosent, at least until the loan was fairly, under way. If there was business to do it could be done m much less time if the Council knew that it had to be done, and be believed the ordinary business might be transacted equally well at ? a meeting once a month as once a fortnight. Under the circumstances it might be as well to allow things to remain as they are m this respect -for- the present, * ■.-.••: Cr Larcomb withdrew his and the matter dropped. The Council then adjourned.
