This appears a very foolish act on the part of the Native Minister, m short it is a childish effort to carry to extremes the retrenchment policy. A few men~ at Parihaka if only a dozen, would always have had a salutary effect. There is no telling $hen the Maoris may. not Ihegin, tli6ir bounce' and annoyance again. Should they it would mean a large' ex-' pense to send men to awe them into good behaviour. It is nothing but a strong temptation to. tho Maoris to makeanother stir to annoy the settlers. lam quite sure no good can come from the entire removal of the force, whereas. the , presonco of a few A.C.'s m the redoubt would have been a wholesome,: check..
