The old bridge at the spot is out of repair, and the new one not sufficiently advanced to allow horsemen to F "cross.: Ydiu® was about the third of the party "to *enwr the' river, and when-in the water struck his horse, .which reared :aiHdi thww his rider, who came to ihe surface. Dorreen shouted to him, to strike, out,, and, Young succeeded, m standing;i|p, though he was immediately carried off his feet, the water reaching his shoulders. He twice gain'e'ct a footing but each firrie he was washed down, arid the last 1 time he was carried down to the rooks nothing : more was seen ofhim.n.iM^ Wra.tf rode back to Ca^vas^own,and reported the accident, when Mr Eankin (who was en. deayoring . to overtake Young. r, and accompany him 'to Nelson)' and others proceeded to the scene of the accident, and searched for the body, in^Hich work they were assisted by the men working at the bridge,4)Ut up to 4 p.m. they had not been successful, though the accident happened at noon. Mr Rankin rode into town, where he arrived shortly be. fore midnight, after having several spilla and narrow escapes on the Maungatapu.
