A Narrow Escape.

Onarriving at Farndon he pulled np arid reported the matter to tire statiomnaster, who communicated at op.cc with Hastings. A, man 'a hat was found-hanging on the step of the engine, andifears were 'entertained that someone had be.en kilted. The station master at Hastings at oriue set' off on a trolly towards Tomoana, and about a quarter of a, mile on the Napier. side he found a man, named 1 ! . Thomas Long? a \yell kjnovvn c|iaracter ; lying beside the Hue,, with his head oirlyl a few iuclies from the rails.' . Ho had apparently been sitting alongside the track; and been 'Struck ■ by .the st^of the engine, as ho had, a . cut - about a couple of inches long on his head, land his fiat had been carried on. When found ho was asleep, with two bottloa of?' beer beside him, and this may explain how he caino to be there. His hurt was not supposed to be'very serious. It was ; a close shave for him.
