Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. THURSDAY, MARCH 5, 1885. THE DAIRY FACTORY.

We are sorry to learn that the Manawatu Butter, Cheese, and Bacon Manufacturing Company, (Limited), is likely to be shortly wound up. It seems as if no co-operative industry is destined to succeed m Palmerston. At the last meeting of directors of the Company the guarantee to the Bank for the overdraft was v renewed for a month, but those responsible, it is understood, will not extend their liability after the expiration of that period. Into whose hands the management will next fall, or what will be its future vicissitudes, it would be idle to conjecture ; but it would appear that to a spirit of active hostility on the part of those whose interests were chiefly affected by the success or. otherwise of the concern, must be attributed the unfortunate consummation now about to be attained. We can but regret, for the sake of the good name of the district, that another failure of local co-opera-tive enterprise has to be placed on record.. We anticipated great and, beneficial results from the establishment of the factory, but those anticipations, it would seem, are not to be realised. Hud there been more unan- . imity displayed by a section of the shareholders, and a less carping desire to thwart the directors, the present rather humiliating result would not have been achieved. It now remains to be seen whether those who were so prone to find fault, and to impute unworthy motives, can themselves undertake with success the duties and responsibilities the discharge of which m the directors, m some quarters, was too readily made the subject of disparaging comment. We trust even yet it is not too late to resuscitate, what should be one of our most important and valuable industries.
