A reduction is being made m the Survey Department and 35 officers m the various parts of the colony Have received notice that their services are to be dis> . pensed with. The saving to the colony will be about LIB.OOO. The saving js not so large as Government at first tended, but Mr. McKerrow, SurveyorGeneral, is unable to further reduce his staff without seriously injuring the service and causing public inconvenience. i The real cost of the Survey Department ; will this year show a much larger reduction by several thousand, as the salary of a large number of officials who are engaged throughout the . colony revising plans under the Land Transfer Department which have appeared uneer the head of surveys are to be charged to the Transfer Department. These are also several other departments whioh caused some considerable additional work tot the Survey Department and these departments are also to be charged .with the value of the work done.
