An "Arbian Nights" Episode.
; The, Assam correspondent ot a Calcutta contemporary writes : — SQme shocking tragedies have occurred, I am told, m the Sihsagor district of late. Two or three of them are not unworthy the imagination of Edgar Allan Foe. A travelling honarie jeweller arrived late one evening at the house of a Brahmin, with whom he had a slight acquaintance, and displayed his wares, The Brahmin, after making some purchase, offered to put him up, for the night. The offer was gladly accepted, anfl it was arranged that the jeweller should sleep on the floor occupied by the Brahmin's son, the Brahmin and his wife occupying the other room. While preparing to turn m," the honarie heard the sharpening of a dao and fragments of a conversation being carried on by the Brahmin and his wife. Suspecting feuT play, he induced the son to change places with him, and as soon as the former was asleep, placed a dummy composed of a bundle of clothes on the bed, crept quickly out, and ascended a tree at the back of the house. In about half an hour he heard the dao doing its work, then an exclamation of ; dissapointment at : finding no plunder, shortly followed by a cry of anguish at the discovery of the mistake the mur : derer had made. From his place of concealment, the jeweller then saw the Brahmin come under the tree with a hoe. Here he dug a grave, m which he buried the body of his son. At early dawn the jeweller descended from his hiding place and gave information at the nearest thannial.' The- police found the body under the tree, and arrested the Brahmin j whose trial comes off at the next assizes, I am informed. >
