... ... The Army List supplies the following record of the services of MajorGeneral Sir Herbert Stewart, whose death from his wounds was recorded m our telegrams on Saturday. He was promoted to the rank of Major-General • after the battle of the Abukela Wells : — "Sir Herbert Stewart, K.C.By^served as Brigade Major of Cavalry m the Zulu war of 1879, and was present at the cavalry aftair at Erzungayan. Specially employed on the lines of -communication after. the breaking up of the Cavalry Brigade. (Mentioned m Colonel Russell's Report. Brevet of Major). Served as principle staff officer the : Transvaal force m the operations' against Sekukini, and subsequently as Military Secretary and Chief of the Staff of Sir Garnet Wolseley. (Mentioned m despatches. Brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel Medal with clasp). Went to South Africa on special service m January, 1881! and served m the Boer war as AssistantAdjutant and Quartermaster-General. (Mentioned m despatch). Served m the Egyptian war of 1882 as AssistantAdjutant and Quartermastei'-Greneral of the cavalry division and was present at the engagements of El Magfat and Telel- Mahuta, the two actions at Kassasin, the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir, and capture of Cairo. (Mentioned m despatches, Aide.de-Camp to the Queen, C.B. medal with clasp, 3rd Class of the Osmanieh, and Khedive's star.) He entered the Army as cornet and lieutenant ; 6n : 24th November, 1863 ; lieutenant, July 1865 ; captain, April, 1868; full Major, 3rd (Prince of Wales) Dragoon Guards,' Ist July, 1881. Was assistant-adjutant and quartermaster-general at Dover."
