Iv the course of an interview with Sir Julius Yogel, Mr Joseph Banks, managing director of the Auckland Frozen Meat Company undertook to experiment with tinning several varieties of fish, with the object of ascertaining which is the most suitable for export and con* sumption. Feb. 25. Arrived — Wairarapa, from Sydney. Cakterton, Feb. 24. For disturbing the Salvation Army meeting the principal offender was fined. £5 and costs. The magistrate allowed the other charges to be withdrawn upon defendants paying costs, and intimated that any future cases would be severely punished. Dunedin, Feb. 24. At Queenstown, yesterday, an inquest was held on Joseph Mitchell, a miner, who was killed m the Invincible mine through a set of timber canting over m a tunnel on Satnrday night. The deceased died on the road near Queonstown. He was an experienced miner, and was very well liked. A verdict of " Accidental death " was found. A sad case of sunstroke occurred on Friday, the victim being a little boy about three years old, son of Mr John Gillen; who resides m Union-street. The child had been playing m the back yard, where he was found by the mother at about 2 o'clock lying m an insensible condition, with his hat off, and apparently very sick. She put him to bed, and Drs Eoberts and Davis were called m at a later hour, but, notwithstanding every care and attention, the little fellow expired at 12 o'clock the following day. Both gentleman concur m the opinion that it- was an undoubted case of sunstroke. CiutiSTcnußCH. Feb. 24. The rainfall here has been exceptionally heavy, l'7Cin having fallen m the twenty-four hours ending 9 a.m. today. Donald McDonald was committed for trial to-day, charged with stealing a posted letter containing a cheque for £41. He was a messenger for the Bank of Australasia, and is supposed to have stolen the letter from a private box. At the Selwyn County Council to-day it was reported that 33 acres of barley at Cheyney's Corner, on Northern Railway line, have been entirely stripped of grain by sparrows. Other crops on the same farm were much damaged, and the owner estimates his loss at about 2300 bushels. The Mutual Life Association of Australasia, who have just established a local board m Christchurch, have bought large freehold premises at the corner of Princes and Dowling-streets, Dunedin, and m Hereford-street, Christchurch. Mr Eeming, secretary to the company, leaves for Auckland, by the Te Anau, to arrange for the erection of magnificent buildings m Queen- street, Auckland, as a central office for the North Island. The purchase and erection of buildings involves an expenditure of .£50,000. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian, Church terminated to-day. The dispute between Stl Andrew's Church and Christchurch Presbytery was amicably settled by a conference between the latter and a committee of the Assembly gave a deliverance against " dancing and other questionable entertainments," for the purpose of raising funds for church purposes. .'New Plymouth, Feb. 25; Burk, one of the warders m the gaol, died somewhat suddenly last night. He had been m ill -health for some time past. Thames, Nov. 25. Ebrenfried's stables, outhouses, &c, at Puriri, have been burned down. The fire is supposed to have ignited spontaneously through the hay heating. Estimated loss over i-500. Insured m Victoria.
