(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, Feb. 22. The' annual meeting of the congregational Union ot New Zealand began today. The Rev. W. H. West, L.L.8., of Wellington, delivered the annual address to-night, m the Beresford-street Church, to a large audience. Chkistchurch. Feb. 24. A man who was thrown from his horse last Saturday night, m consequence of the animal being frightened by the Salvation Army band ; complained to the City Council this evening. The Council requested the Mayor to interview Inspector Pender, to see what steps could be taken to have the Saturday night processions of the army stopped. Dunedin, Feh. 23. An inquest was held this afternoon concerning the death of Annie Castles, who had been an inmate of the Seaeliff Lunatic Asylum. The deceased had had an epileptic fit while m bed on the morning ot the 21st inst., and she got smothered by putting her. head, in a bag of scraps, which she kept on her pillow. She was admitted m. the asylum m 1876, and was 35 years of age. The thighbone of a young man, supposed to be that of Samuel Cooper, drowned at the Ocean Beach a fortnight ago, was picked up alongside the St. Clair Baths yesterday afternoon. Mr Alfred Austin writes to the Star that by next mail he will send to the London Sportsman a challenge for Joe Scott to walk any man m the world for 12 or 24 hours for £250 a-side, or 24 hours alone for £500 a-side. Gisbokne, Feb. 23. The Hon. Mr Ballance arrived this morning by the Hinemoa, which returned to Auckland for Sir Julius Yogel. It is proposed to banquet the two Ministers on Thursday evening. M. de Harven has paid a short visit to this district. Mr Ballance was interviewed by several deputations to-day, and his replies m references to native lands were of a satisfactory nature m view of the requirements of this district. He will attend a large native meeting to-morrow. WESTPoar, Feb. 23. The first crushing of stone fvoin the Guiding Star mine gave 1640z from 80 tons of quartz.
