THE LATE GENERAL EARLE.
Major-General Earle, who , baa fallen "m the Soudan, was (says^acoutemporary) a brother of Sir" Thonaaa Earle, second baronet of Allurton .Tower, Wool ton,. .Lancashire, and descendant of a line of WeaJlifxLiveiv pool f merchants. He was born m 1833, educated: at Harrow, and entered the army m 1851. He bocarae a captain iv 1 865, . lieutenantcolonel of the Grenadier ,.Guu£ls ia 1863, colonel, m 1870,, and mujorgeneral m 1880. He Rwrv.ed tjijoiighout the Eastern campaign 1854-5, receiving a medal with, thrfte cia&ps, the .Sardinian :»nd Turkish , medals,- and the sch class of. the Mejidie. In 1881 he was ajj|)ointe<l/ttj thej;^n^fi»^,d of the 2nd Brigade at Aldershot, and at •firwl it was intended that he. should hav&shprcme command of vbVSoudikn expedition, although, ultimately it was decided to give it to Lorti^olseley.
