The Salvation Army.
[The Taranaki Herald.] The Salvation Army and the. Police Force came into collision on Saturday evening, and the matter will probably ! occupy the. Police Court. The Army have hit upon a novel idea of bringing the drunkard and backslider, to repen tance, but according to the police, the idea won't hold water. The Army wanted to parade m front of the hotels, and ithe .police objected to the streets being blocked. Thereupon the officers of the Army issued orders. that their force was to march around m a circle ;(a la the march around the walls of Jericho), but always m the dame place — -m front of the hotels. On no account were they to stop; they must keep on the move. This dodge somewhat riled the publicans, and they were loud m their complaints. The police, always on the gui vive, saw a flaw m the Army's " idea," and, on Saturday evening last, the pet scheme was rudely exploded. The Army marched out m nront of the Imperial Hotel, and commenced the'circular business, with the result that traffic was impeded. The police remonstrated with the " soldiers," but without avail. Assistance was secured, and - the police made a stand. The Army, probably , thinking "discretion the better part of valor," ate humble pie, swallowed their pride, and, desisting, marched back to their barracks. A civil war was averted. The Army might take warning; the foolish policy of obstruction can only bring opprobrium uDon them.
