Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1885. HARVEST PROSPECTS.
■ ■ # . . . With reference to havest prospects m the South, the President of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, m his speech to that body, said : — ln my former address to the Chamber, it wns my privilege to direct attention to a sensible clearing of the commercial and agricultural atmosphere, and to draw encouragement from apparently reasonable evidences that bottom had been touched, and that more cheerful days were dawning. I am happy td say that the slight but decided improvements alluded to has steadily gained strength, and given a month's bright warm dry weather, the voice of the croaker will wax weaker, and it will be found that an impetus has been given to the trade and commerce of the province. Harvest is now m progress under very favourable weather conditions, and both the quantity and quality of the crops promise well. The market for grain is likely to open low, but m the event of the crop being secured m Bound oondition, and practical evidence of this faot occurred to English and continental buyers, I am persuaded that market quotations for New Zealand wheat will recover their position m relation to those for Australian wheats, and our producers will reap the benefit accordingly. There is no cause for inpreased anxiety on the score of prices. The English market is dis-
tinctly shongor than it was three months ago ; our crop is likciy to he better fitted to carry than it was during the two previous years, owing to the increase ot sunshine experienced ; and, furthcrj the area under crop throughout the world must be loss formerly. My advice to the farmer is, secure and protect your crops from the "'weather by getting them into the stack or bag, but if you can afford it, do not be m too great haste to realise.
