GENERAL EYRE.
[Wanganui Herald^ On* cablegram*, to-day contain the news of the death of several of the lending officei a m the, Soudan. A.mongst these is mentioned Colonel Eyre, who is second cousin to. Mr Dudley Eyre of this town. The deceased, Phillip Eyre, »on of Richard Eyre of Mount View, Eyre Court. County (Jalway, entered the army as a private m 1*853. He joined the 38th under Sir John Campbell, and shortly afterwards went out to the Crimea. At the conclusion ol the war, he came Home an a lieutenant. :. He was next sent to India, and served through the mutiny, coming home a Major. After this he was pent to America for a long time, and then he again saw service m the last Egyptian War. He was specially picked bj;,Geueral l^olseley ; for the Sondan expedition, and has now met the fate which it sepma likely the majority of that ex|»rdition will meet. It is a curious fact that he had never been wounded during the whole of the service lie had seen, and his death wounds were therefore his first and la«t wounds.
