Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1885. THE SOUDAN.
The news published elsewhere conveys the mournful intelligence that General Gordon has lost his life m Khartoum. Till now there was a remnant of hope that through some fortune of war he may have been spared. But we fear the intelligence now received has dissipated the hopes rbr his safety entertained by so many thousands of persons who admired General Gordon as a man and a soldier. He was possessed with such limitless resources, and had had such hairbreadth escapes before, that he appeared to have a charmed life, and it was generally expected he would hold Khartoum until the too tardy relief came to his rescue. We may now regard his fato as certain, his tragic death being due to treachery more than the fortune of war. Many will feel a moistening of the eye and experience a tremor of the heart when they realize the sad fate- of the brave and noble General. It would appear that the Soudan campaign is going to cause England much trouble before the rebellion is quelled. No doubt Gordon's -death will be avenged, but the retribution will entail the sacrifice of many lives and prove a costly experience to the nation.
