Local industry.
(TO THE EDITOR O? THK STAXDARD.) j Sir, — I am sorry to see Uy your report of the last Borough Council meeting, that several of the Conncillora are throwing cold water on the proposal to start a .Soap factory m Palmerston. ■ I think that if auy private individual is plucky (inface of the recent failure) to •start a thing of this descriptibi»7""He' is deserving of every encouragement. One thing is very certain that, unless some local-industries are started iu -Palmers-^ ton, we can ha/c no pennanont iinprorement m the preseut very .bad state of things. Fictitious improvement we may have by reason of railway or other public works, but we want something muclt nVbre: stable thon that; ..- % have been informed that, if Mr Carter makes a commercial success of soap making, he will also tart a jam factory, being practically .acquainted with bStl^ busiucssus.lf he docs so it will be a good thing for the small settlers of this place who have perhaps front five to tett acres of. land, which, planted m small fiuits, : would realize for, theinselvesand families a good income, m a comparatively easy, and pleasant occupation. Industries of : this iißture should bo fostered by every possible mean b, ,and encouragoment given to anyone who is willing to 'invest capital, m what-iuustj evcntuslly, bring much money to the district.. I am &c.,— ;. , . .... . Pro Bono Publico. ■
