A. New Invention.

A new kind bf cross-cut saw; has/ been invented by a Mr N. Gibbons, of Poverty Bay. A log of white pine, 3ft. Gin m diameter, had been brought m for tbe purpose of the experiment. A sawyer who was present stated that he and bis brother could with an ordinary, saw; cut through a 3ft;log in.lGininutes, and he is said to have been surprised at ; finding that a man ;and a boy could ; witb the;new saw get throiigh the log I tried on m nine minutes with ease. Several trials: were made m competition with ordinary saws, and m each case the advantage was largely m .-favour of* the new saw,. both as to time and expenditure of power. The saw is on quite a new; principle, and is said to require no .setting. The teeth are m sets of three, 1 of which one. is thin with an edge like that of a chisel, the next is the same only with: its edge, on the ppppsitecjside, while each third tooth is the full width- of the saw. The side, teeth make straight cuts into the wood, | and the third tpoth.cuts horizontally what the sidejteeth have already cut vertically. There is, therefore no sawdust, butj\the cut, wood ; ;comes out m little flakes Besides, the ! peculiar construction of the ; 7teeth, I from edge to back for about- , eight inches m the centre the ;mej;al is || tapered down Jfijroin %\ quartern q£ an j! inch to something like onesi^teenth I at the back, which effectually . stops I; any jambing in -the cut. It has also ■< an angle. .of declination much greater: than that of the - usual saw, thus ■ enabling/ jbus'hmerr 'to 7 6ut-' right; through a /log when the lower side is> closedown on the surface of the grouiid; <~ or, as may .often:' "happen,, a few inches below-it. Veritical mill, saws on the same principle (says the; Pojer^y Bay .Jfeg^la), are nftw s b.eing testecf m one of Aucklandf sawmills. ; r Mr l'«ice ; . of Pututahi, .who has had many years experience m felling afld; . cross-cutting timber is said to be quite .satisfied.that "-jhe xf^nr style of saw will beat any other fj j K j
