Fish Preservation.
Some interesting experiments have been made by Mr N. Heath m the refrigeration of live fish. Mr Heath conducted his researches m the freezing chambers of the ship Mataura before he left Auckland to take charge of the Napier Boys 1 High School. He discovered that fish freshly caught can be frozen and kept m that state for three or four hours, all animation being apparently completely suspended, andjon being returned to water will come to life again. It has been noticed m England that were shallow ponds have been frozen to the bottom m winter time the fish have not suffered, and Mr Heath is under the impression that this knowledge might be turned to account by forwarding the fish themselves instead of their ova when their introduction is desired m a new country. It is known that the refrigeration of j ova does not destroy the germinating principle, and this accidental j discovery will go a long way towards the simplification of export. This fact has suggested the refrigeration of birds 1 eggs, and Mr Heath intends, we believe, to ask Messrs Nelson Bros 1 permission to carry on the experiments at Tomoana which he commenced at Auckland.
