The Palmerston Borough Council meets this evening. Mr T. B. Walton delivered a very impressive address at the grave of the late Mr W. E. Chamberlain, which was listened to with profound attention. For cruelly flogging a horse m Wanganui a man named Robert McLean was fined 80s, costs 13s, and witnesses 18s. The admission to the Wellington race course is fixed at one shilling. There will be four days consecutive races, and all the hotels and lodging houses are foil of visitors. * There was a heavy thunderstorm early this mornines the lightning, thunder, rain, and, wind forming together a tumultuous strife of elements. The lightning was very brilliant at times. The Road Board meeting stands adjourned till to-morrow, having been postponed from the usual date, to-day. The 43rd Anniversary of Nelson was celebrated on Monday. The chief attraction was the Friendly Societies' fete, which was attended by some 8000 people. Mr McDowell, who has been m Wellington, saw Signor Otto Hug, who had just arrived from Australia. He purposes re-visiting Palmerston m about a month.- .He . did exceedingly well m Melbourne and Adelaide. Two advertisements from the Dairy Factory Company will be found elsewhere. We learn that Messrs Pascal had not such a bad "burn" after all. A large area is satisfactory, but the rainfall prevented the rest from being as good. P.P.G.M. C. P. Kearns, the oldest Oddfellow m New Zealand, died at Stoke, Nelson, on Monday, aged 68. He had been an Oddfellow over 50 years, and assisted to start the order m Nelson 43 years ago.
The Manawatu County Council meets at Foxton to-morrow. A man unknown has perished from thirst on the Brewarrina run. Ants had commenced to devour him before death took place. The Wellington R.M. holds that a foreman is not justified m punishing an apprentice for disobedience, but must take him before his master. The Undaunted Company, at Tinker's divide £390 per man for eight months work. " Vigilant," writing m the Post, picks Tigredia to win the Gold Cup, with Sou- wester and Black Rose as her immediate attendants. The sculling match between Hanlan and Clifford takes place on Saturday. The betting is 2 to. 1 on Hanlon. Both are m good condition. Efforts are being made to reconcile the existing differences between operatives and employers m the boot-making trade m Melbourne.
