At the inquest a verdict was returned ot accidentally drowned whilst m au apoplectic fit. Chbistchubch, Jan. 19. Bussey, farmer, Rakain, recovered £100 damages from C. W. Turner, agent at Rnkaia for the New Zealand L. and M. A. Company, on account of slander, l>ut the jury found that there 'had been no libel. Marchaut, of Hawera, is an additional nomination for the Now Plymouth Harbor Board election. Blenheim, Jan. 19. A boy, aged fouiteeu, named James Brown, was charged at the Resident Magistrates Court to-day with maliciously injuring another boy named Tucker by an explosion of gunpowder. Brown called Tucker to pick up some powder off the ground, which had beeu spilt m loading a toy cannon, and whilst Tqcker was doing so, it is alleged that Brown exploded the powder with a match. Tucker's face was severely burned, and Brown's slightly. Brown's defence was that he had accidently spilt the powder as he was letting off the cannon. Tho Bench held that, although gross careleHauess had beeu shown which deserved punishment, yet there was not sufficient evidence of wilful intent to send the case for trial, and the case was dismissed. The Bench commented severely on the person who sold the powder. Waipawa, Jan. 19. An inquest was held to-day, before Mr Samuel Johnston, coroner, on the body of Annie Dum, who died on Saturday. Deceased was the wife of Louis Dum, who left her five years ago, and she obtained a character for loose living ever since. A verdict of death from natural causes was returned. Masteutox, Jau. 19. Mr Edwin Meredith, jun., of Riversdale, died to-day, after a long illness.
