Charge of Forgery.
PREPS ASSOCIATION.) .-.".• Chkistchurch, Jan 12. Robert Day was this evening commited for trail, on a charge of forging a cheque for .£IOOO on the. Bank of New Zealand. .The circumstances of the case, are rather peculiar. The theory of the prosecution is that accused got possesion of the tijle.deeds.pt 'two farms belonging .to his father, Daniel Day, that he went, to the Bank of New Zealand with these, and represented himself to the manager as his father, and obtained an advance by depositing the deeds. Mr Anderson who : was acting manager of the bank at, the time, swears that accused is the man to whom he gave tho advance, but lie . previously described the man as "rather; grey," whereas accused ,ha,d' no .grey hairs visible to an Ordinary observer^ For the defence a number of witnesses sworo that on the day the advance was grafted- at the bank accused was , ill m : bed, 'and did 'riot leave his house,- which is 15 miles 'from Chris.tchureh, at all. 1
