The Wellington lumpers are on strike owing to a rednction being made m the coal heavers from Is 6d to Is 3d per hour. At the Police Court to-day before Mr Pratt, J.P., Robert Lawless, for breaking into the dwelling of Mr McDouall, of Rangitikei Line, on New Year's Day and stealing therefrom goods and money to the value of £8 was remanded till next Tuesday at 11 a.m. In the Otago-Auckland cricket match the latter won by five wickets. The Dairy Company have altered their trade mark to a circle enclosing three diamonds m the centre. At top the word Manawatu and underneath letters N.Z. Trade mark being written under the diamonds. At the request of several of our country agents extra copies of the Standard Sheet Almanac for 1885 have been sent to-day for free distribution to those applying for them. Any of our town subscribers who have not received their copy will please apply at the office for one. The Waipawa Mail under the new proprietory is to be issued three times a week. Mr Chamier appears to have made a very good star*, his first issue being a very creditable one. The Jane Douglas arrived at 11.30 this morning and leaves again at 10 o'clock to-night. -. We again remind out town subscribers that our collector will call on them for payment of subscriptions due and arrears on Monday, when a prompt settlement is requested. It now appears that a German trading firm lays claim to the districts m East Africa, the ownership of which has just been assumed by Gre^at Britain. We learn that the potatoes referred to m yesterday's issue as gfcpwn by Mr G. Richardson, Foxton Line.were originally obtained from Mr Luxford whose promises with regard to them have been more than fulfilled. We learn that Mr Jas. Prosser has reentered into possession of the Club Hotel, Marton. Mr Watts, the late landlord, is on the lookout for another opening. Messrs Stevens and Gorton have decided on account of the holidays, not to hold their usual stock sale at Awahuri, on the 6th instant. Dealers m stock and others will please take note of the same. A monster picnic will be given on the 22nd inst., by the Marton Wesley an church and we understand it is contemtemplated to invite the Palmerston choir to render the oratorio Paradise on the same evening, an equal division ot all profits derived therefrom to" be made afterwards. A meeting of the Boating Club is convened for Monday evening at the Commercial Hotel. It is to be hoped there will be a full attendance of members, as business of importance is to be transacted.
