One enterprising life insurance agent was to-day making official inquiries with a view to affecting an insurance on the life of the man William Sheehan, who is m prison on suspicion of murder. At the annual meeting of the Turkish Bath Company, the year's profit was stated at .£127. There were nearly 4000 visitors during the year. DUNEDIN, Dec 30. About 100 gentlemen accepted the invitation of Messrs Shaw and Savill's agent to a lunch on board the steamer Arawa. Dr Stenhouse was thrown from his buggy by his horse taking fright at a drove of cattle. Being thrown down a slope of some 20ft, he received severe injuries, and suffers from concussion of the spine. The groom escaped unhurt. A waterspout broke. on the Bock and Pillar mountain, Strath Taieri, oh Sunday, but beyond flooding the plain did no damage. There was a narrow escape from a serious accident to the Naseby coach. While m the river the traces of the leaders broke, and the horses bounding forward pulled the driver off his seat into the river. The horses then bolted, but sticking to the reins the driver (Jas. Sutherland) succeeded m running them into a fence, the coach having m the meantime run over his arm, severely bruising it.Invercaugill, Dec. 30. A man named George Johnston, manager of Mr C. D. Moore's store at Win--1 tori, has committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree m the bush near the township. He was unmarried, aged 30, and m easy circumstances, but has been drinking. An inquest will be held. He was to have been married m the New Year. A number of policyholders m the Government Assurance Office coinplain that they have not seoeived voting papers for the election of members of the Central Board. CiißiSTCuußCir, Dec. 30. The directors of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company are advised that the depth of No. 8 bore on Wednesday was 512 ft, having gone down 10ft m one day. Shares m the company to the number of 290 were sold at auction today at 3s 9d; 1200 were withdrawn from sale m consequence of the above advice. Greymoutf, Dec. 30. The weather was shocking far the races to-day. The rain came down m torrents, and the course was conse-_ gently very heavy and wet. The front/ of the grandstand, where the public con-l gregate, was ankle deep m mud. The hurdle race was postponed till the following day.
