Chinese Warfare.
Besides the proclamation offering rewards for killing and capturing Frenchmen which were quoted from the Daily Press the other day the Canton authorities have issued another infamous list of the rewards they are prepared to give for such services. It will be seen that the prices have been considerably raised. The proclamation begins : — The people of this province have hitherto been conspicious for their bravery and loyalty. Now, therefore, you must look upon the French as I your foes, aud with united hearts co-operate with the Government m defensive operations. Rewards will be issued according to merit as follows : — For killing a commander-in-chief. Tls, 10,000 and official rank (kingfishers feather). For killing a seven stripped officer, Tls. 3,000 and official rank (kingfisher's feather ). For killing a five-striped officer. Tls. 1,030 and official rank (peacock's feather.) For killing a tbree-striped officer, Tls, 600 and official rank (peacock's feather.) For every French soldier or sailor killed,Tls. 1,000. [Strict care must be taken to distinguish the foe from other foreigners.] For capturing a first-class ironclad, 100,000. For capturing a second-class ironclad Tls, 20,000. For capturing a first-class gunboat. Tls, 40,000. For capturing a second-class grn-boat.Tls, 20,000. For captureing a ship's boat Tls, 100. If a vessel be destroyed, half the above amount will be paid. If captured the property will belong to the persons captur ing it. For capturing the guns of the enemy. Guns ofabove 10,000 catties Tls, 3,000 and official rank : and for smaller guns sums proportionate to the size of the guns. Anyone devising a plan by which the French are defeated m a fight will receive Tls, 30,000. The reward will be distributed by the Provincial Treasurer.
