An 'Auckland merchant, who was desirous of opening up a trade with the silver mines at Sllverton, m New South Wales, via Adelaide, recently got the following reply to his enquirieß,from a gentleman at Adelaide : — " Communication between Adelaide and Silverton is by train to Terowie, thence by coach to Silvertou ; time, two days ; cost, about £6 10s. I have just interviewed a capitalist from Silverton, who gives anything but an encouraging report. He says none of the mines are m reality paying, all being worked at the expense of shareholders, although some by purchase have commanded considerable sums. The usual rate of wages (say, 8s per diem) rules the market for miners' services, One bank has started business m the place, but extends very poor accommodation to the residents, notinore than 25 per cent, on products of work. Hotels number abont six, m adjtion to the usual mushroom grog-shops and saloons (skittle and billiard). House room is very poor and scanty, every and any place being made available to meet tho natural requirements. In conclusion, I cannot reccomend you to enter upon your proposed venture, cither In bupplying communication from New Zealand or timber. I thoroughly believe that Silverton will eventually bo a prosperous little township, but at present everything is m its infancy ; high prices rule tho roast, and men without money arc at a discount."
