A contributor to the Marton paper writes as follows anent the payment of commission to owners of totalizators :— I think it is monstrous that a couple of men should be allowed to make from £100 to J2OO at our two days* facing year after year simply for the use of their machine and their own services. The thing could be worked easily enough m this way—the club. could purchase a machine quite good enough for their needs far something under 4>lOo, which could be worked by a couple of men for, at the most, three guineas per day each, and there would be plenty of com« petent men- willing to do it for some* thing less. The money saved during the first year (which at present goes to fatten Messrs Hill and Poole) would more than pay for any expenditure m connection with the machine, and m following years a reduction might be made m the percentage charged to the public, which at present is far too high. Or, why not join with Pahnerston, Feuding, and Foxton, and the thing might be done for i>2s a-pieco. - . %
