PALMERSTON RACE MEETING.

President: Mr D. H. Macarthur, M.H.R. — Vice-Presidents : Messrs H. McNeil and James Linton — Stewards: Messrs J. 11. F. Pratt, W. Akers, T. H. Caverhill, W. G. Robinson, F. E. Watson, A. Bentley, and R. S. Abraham — Starter : Mr J. C. Nathan — Clerk of Course : Mr J. Lane — Clerk of Scales : Mr T. King — Judge : Mr T. Knight — Handicapper : Mr Alex. Higgie — Timekeeper: Mr H. W. Haybittle — Hon. Treasurer : Mr Thos. King. The annual meeting was held yesterday, and considering all things was a decided success. In the forenoon the weather was very unpromising, the ram | falling heavily for upwards of an hour, making the outlook anything but encouraging. However, by 12 noon it had brightened, and a splendid afternoon succeeded. The attendance was not quite so large as previous years, the absence of ladies being principally due to th© threatening state of the weather. The sport was m all respects excellent, and the absence of serious accidents and rowdyism were alike subjects of congratulation. The stewards discharged their duties with zeal and efficiency, and the general management was that all could be desired. The course was heavy, the recent almost incessant wet having permitted no other condition. The trains brought a number of visitors from north and south, though the second train from Wanganui arrived empty at the station. The totalizator was m the hands of Mr Abrahams, and though there were some complaints m reference to its working, we don't think there were any serious grounds for dissatisfaction m reference thereto. We might say, however, that we think it would be an improvement that would be appreciated by the public to have a second instrument on the ground, and prevent the crowding that took place round the enenclosure just prior to each race. We should imagine that the purchasers of the privileges should not have much cause for dissatisfaction with the returns netted for then* investments. 1.
