D'Arcy Hyland went to 'Frisco by the last moil boat. At his farewell exhibition m Auckland he rode a Wanganui horse never ridden before. The chief officer of the steamer Hawea has been committed for trial on a charge of manslaughter, on the grounds that when the man Lovelace received fatal iniuries m the hold of that vessel, the seaman who had been Btationed at the hatch of the vessel, to give warning of any accident being likely to occur, had been taken away by the chief officer to perform some other duty. The mate of the man who was injured had managed to get out of the way, but the deceased had got his foot jammed. The accused was liberated on bail. Dr Schwarzbach, the celebrated specialist, will he making a professional visit to Wanganui after the New Year. The Standard will not be published on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The. steamer Star of the South touched the stonework at the entrance of Greymouth when leaving that port, and has settled down so as to damage her hull considerably. Her crew and passengers have been sent ashore, and her cargo is being. unloaded. Her position ( is dn awkward one, and it is not improbable she may have to be launched.
