; ; / ♦■ The police have been prosecuting some of the tailors and dressmakers m Wanganui for keeping their hands working after 2 o'clock on Saturday. The Foxton loan proposals were rei jected. There were 44 votes for the I proposal, and 18 against, one vote being also informal. The required two-thirds of the total number of votes exercisable by all the ratepayers m the Foxton District was not obtained, whence the re»ult. The following additional postage will bo charged, pursuant to a notice m the Gasetta, on all letters, newspapers, etc., sent by- Suez and Brindisi : — One shilper half-ounce for letters; threepence for every two ounces on book packets and parcels ; antt- -trrropouoc tav^ evovy newspaper. The new regulation will affect all correspondence leaving the United Kingdom on and after ■ January 7tli next. ' The Jane Douglas will leave Foxton for Wellington to-night. The Church of England at Opunake is used for storing wool m, and at the present it is almost full. Five boys were mulcted m 31s costs for tin-kettling a newly -married couple m Blenheim. An Auckland dramatisation of { Called Back,' played by Miss Crawford's Company, is drawing good houses. A special to the Post re the Government land is as follows : — There was a large attendance at the land sale, and the competition for the deferred payment sections was keen, and prices high, but there was little or no demand for the cash sections, only a few being sold. Twenty-two out of thirty leasehold sections realised £6800. Cash sections to the extent of 3201 acres fetched i' 2157. ; It appears that the wife and family of 'Alfexa-ndpjr.Forsythe Anderson, who has been remanded to Liverpool on a charge embezzling money belonging to the Brownlow Board of Guardians, are on their way out to the colony m the ship Opawa, which left London for Wellington 011 October Bth. In -order to await their arrival, if possible, Anderson will do his best to obtain a further remand m the colony. Wairarapa papers notice with regret the death of another old settler, Mr •Hollard, sen., of Greytown, who expired on Sunday morning, aged 73. Mr Hoilard arrived m Wellington m 1841 m the ship Arab, and resided for several years at the Hutt, moving thence to Wairarapa. In Adelaide there are eighteen public houses within an area of a quarter of a mile square. Saturday the -27th December will be observed as a special holiday throughout the colony by all the Banks. Forty-five horses and forty-three head :of cattle -for Sydney were on board the I s.s. Wakafcipu,* from the South m Weiliugton on Thursday. ■. Salvage operations are proceeding vigorously at the wreak, of the Lastingham, And large quantities of cargo are still feeing obtained. The "spec" should prove a lucky, one for the share- . holders. ' Cablegrams announcing Malua's victory, and dated " Melbourne, This Day," appeared m the fourth editions (published ftjt 2,30) of all the evening" papers on Tuesday, 4th November. The New Zealand Times speaking of the libel flint, remarks :— " Sir Julius Vogol will find that we are quite as ready to proceed with the action as he is." W. Sheehan, the principal m the •Castletown Koche triple, mm'der, has, it is understood, been traced to Jsew Zealand. A constable who knows him well has been d&spatcHed to the colony m with a detective, and it is thought tbe case will be ripe for trial at tho next assizes at Cork. We notice that. Mr C. Tho following letter appears m the Pout : — Sir, — Not having seen or hoard ot any arrangements as to holidays this year, and seeing that Christmas tails on Thursday — Friday being Boxing Day — what are wo going to do with Saturday ? Is it worth opening business for halt" a day ? Hoping that wo may arrange for close holidays from Wednesday to Monday, the 20th inst., — I am, &c, Tihkd Out. At the Wellington City Council the Mayor intimated that he hail received a notice of motion which contained maliciously libellous statements about himself. He had therefore excised the motion from the order paper. Councillor A. W. Brown asked whether it was not provided by the standing orders that the council should decide upon such a matter. The Mayor replied m the negative, quoting the clause of the orders upon ;which he based his dictum.
