Breaking up of the Central State School.
! * The children having all been assembled m the large room Mr J. P. Lcary,' Chairman, and the Rev. A. M. Wright distributed the prizes. In a few well j chosen sentences the Chairman stated | the manner m which the prizes were awarded,' which was based m the Standard Classes, on regular astendance, good conduct, and success at examination, and m the infant classes, on attendance alone, every child obtaining aprize who had attended 220 halt' days. A special feature was the distribution of the Government certificates of good attendance. First Class certificates were gained by Annie Newmaun, Thomas Jordan, Jas. Jamieson. Second Class certificates were gained by Annio Jordan, Florence Lewis, Florence Nattian, Edith Allihgham, Maggie Newmann, Cecilia Newmann, Albert Jordan, Arthur Carty, Charles and Win. Shailer. The following special prizes were given : — Tlae most advanced scholar by Mr H. J. Hanking awarded to ftfary Robert. The best progress m past year, by Mr W. Park, awarded to Jas. Jamieson. Natural Science by Mr F. H. Smith one each to Elizabeth Batchelar and Jno. Stnbbs. Good Conduct, by Mr F. H. Smith, to Christina Moffatt. The Chairman, Mr Leary, gave a book and a lady's reticule for the most popular boy and girl. These were ballotted for, and caused great ex citement. Josiah Batchelar was the successful candidate for the boys' voto, and received rounds of applause on walking up to got it. As Annie Innos and Elizabeth Batchelar tied m the number of votes, the Rev. Mr Wright kindly consented to give another prize of equal value to balance matters. Tho Committee provided 113 prizes which were apportioned on the basis already described.
