The origin of the fire is unknown. An influential meeting of citizens was held to-day, at which the mayor presided, to arrange for a banquet to Sir J. Yogel on his visit here. The Executive Committee, composed of the heads ofmost of the leading 'Christc'hiirch firms with other gentlemen,. was appointed to. arrange the details. ... Timahtt, Dec. 9. The Supreme Court opened to-day. The calendar is an ordinary one, and not heavy, there being only one case oi an uncommon nature, viz., counterfeiting cpin of the realm, with which two men, father and son, are charged. The civil list is a long one. True bills have been found against James Martin, for burglary, and Thomas Park, for rape. ; James Mitchell, for burglary, received five years ; Thomas -Park, who pleaded guilty, of rape, 10 years. . v ; Napier, Dee. 9. The Resident Magistrate delivered judgment tin's morning m the petition of Joseph Kilgour. and others againstjthe election for Paroa Biding, for which A. B. Guinness was returned. The.election was declared null and void, on account ot certain irregularities tending to defeat the fairness of the election — viz., one woman voted twice, she being on the roll m two different names, and ithe Beturning Onicer having wrongfully : refused to take certain other votes. The case chiefly turned upon the question as to whether holders of miners' rights : af c entitled to vote. The Magistrate held they were, under the 41st sec. of; the Counties Act, 1882. Mr Guinness has given notice to apply for. a prohibition, to the Supreme Court, Christchurch. ' Auckland, Dec. 9. At a meeting of shareholders of the New Zealand Land and .Mortgage.Company,. Sip Fredrick Wlu'taker, chairman stated that the London direotqrs ponteinplated declaring a dividend of 7 per cent, on the first year's operations m Febnmry next. One hundred men are now engaged on the Calliope Dock works. Gisborne, Dec. 9. Four Maoris and one European were given from eighteen months to three years for horse-stealing. Judge Gillies said the buyers of the stolen hores were equally guilty, and ought to be put m the dock.
