LOCAL INDUSTRIES.
The last issue of the New Zealand Trade JZevieiv and Prices Current contains some very opportune references to the efforts now being made m the direction of encouraging local industries. We particularly note the following :— " In our last
issue wo noticed the increase m the export from New Zealand of certain articles of colonial produce. It appears to us, however, that there is still room for a further delopment of this trade m certain lines to which our farmers, &c., might well turn their attention. In the items of malt, hops, cheese, bacon, and hams, for instance, the local product has not only driven the imported article practically out of the field, but exj ports of colonial goods to a considerable extent take place. We find, however, that our neighbours m Australia still draw largely from Great Britain for some of these articles, and we see no good reason why New Zealand should not supply their requirements m this respect to a larger extent than is at present the case."" This is undoubtedly a paragraph suggestive of much foodifor reflection, particularly when itj is backed up by figures quoted from Stables, Strakers and Coy's circular, showing that 44,982qrs of malt, 4036cwt ot hops, 1 18cwt of cheejse, and 6260cwt of bacon and hams were imported from Great Britain jby Australia during 1883. • *
