Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1884. THE POLITICAL POSITION.
, The Post has the following ominous forecast on the state of affairs political. Our contemporary, which has special facilities for obtaining •political information of a reliable character, and can form a pretty accurate estimate of the current of public opinion with regard to political niatterti, thus concludes an article headed <k A v probable dissolution " : — From 1 somewhat careful study of the members of the new * House, we doubt whether any scheme of local government which 'the .Ministry may. jbring down will command the support: of a' working majority m the House. It will be extremely difficult even to define distinct party lines m the present House, and unless the Government is supported m ..its policy by a well-knit party of sufficient strength to give effect to its -principles* it will have no option but to appeal unto Capsar. This, is, the Fesult whiph we fully anticipate. The Ministry will bring down its local government proposals, and will > be. unable to cajrry them. Then as it will be fully entitled Jo clo, wijl ask for % dissolution, and leaye it; tp the country to pronounce a decisive verdict on its policy. A general election 'about the middle of the coming year is, we think, not only possible, but extremely probable, and then, if well-defined issues are placed before the country, the result can hardly fail to smooth away many f difficulties which have for a long time past seriously interfered with the ■ piopet and legitim ate operation of Parliamentary government m New Zealand.
