By a return laid before the House.the strength of the volnnteer force is shown to bo 4332, of which 3394 are set down as efficient.; They are made up as fallows :— Cavalry, 379 ; Naval Artillery, 530; Artillery, G34; Garrison Rifle, 1621 ; County Corps, 1168; The ordnance m the colony on March 31, 1884, was m ado [up of one '4o, sis 12, and ten 0-pniindcr' Aimntvong guns; ten 24---pounder Howitzers, eleven 7-ton guns, eleven 04-ponriHers, eleven mortars, and fifteen iron guns of various kinds. The use of Morris' tubes, a recent invention largely patronised at Home for assisting volunteers to carry out a couvbo of musketry instruction m their drillsheds, is rccomemled as affording facilities for practice m all kinds of weather. *-
