He was awarded first pi ize at the Wanganui Agricultural and Pastoral Show, as being the horse best calculated to improve the breed of upstanding saddle horses ; and subsequently won the Wanganwi and Turakina hurdle races, m large fields and good company, besides having run second for several hurdle l-aces and steeplechases under heavy weights. He is from the same dam as Malvina, winner of the Dunedin Cup, and many other important races. He is 7 years old, and by that fast and well-known horse Castaway, dam Soinnainbula t-y Towton, imported, dam Opera, by II Barbiere, dam Ciissandra by Priam ; Towton, imported, by Melbourne ; Castaway by Tradncer, imported, dam Mermaid, imported. Morpheus comes from a great racing family, claiming some aristocratic and high-class performers as his relatives. His sire won the Wellington Cup and van second for the Christclmrch Derby and Great Autumn Handicap. He is fall brother to Lurline and Le Loup. The performances of these animals m New Zealand and Australia need no conn menu. Le Loup won the Canterbury J. C. Handicap and Cup m 1880. Opera, grand dam of MorpJieus, won the Canterbury Derby m 1864. Tarabourini was also from Opera, by Towton, and won amongst other races, the Canterbury J. C. Handicap and Canterbury and Wellington Cups, besides performing successfully over hurdles. Salvage, by Castaway, ran second foe the Wellington Cup m 1882, giving the winner a year and a pound. Won the Great Autumn Handicap at Christchtirch, and ran second to Adamant for the Dunedin Cup giving the wiuner two years and twenty -four pounds. Wou the Auckland Cup and Free Handicap. Towton, imported, is the grand sire of MorpJieus, and the sire of such noted performers as Golden Cloud, Master Rowe, Misfortune. MorpJieus is nearly full brother m blood to Darebin, admitted to be as brilliant a horse as ever trod the Australian turf. His sire, the pure imported Clydesdale horse, Fowler's Wallace, bred by Mr Donald McKinley, Wouldham Hall, near Gloucester, out of a pure Clydesdale mare, bred »»y Mr J. N. Fleming, Campbelton, Scotland] her sire, the celebrated horse Lofty Wallace, gained i several first prizes before leaving the Old country. Maggie was bred by Mr Sutherland, Taieri, Otago, out of a Napoleon mare, by Sir WilH«m Wallace (imported). Sir William Wallace, bred by William Anderson, Esq., Kirkmichael, Ayrshire, out of Brisk, by Garibaldi. As a yearling took lirst prize at May bole, Kirkmieliae), and Glasgow, and second at Ayr.
