Austin expiresses his willingness to bade Scott against the former for twenty^four or fortyeight hours. Hancock is a celebrated English pedestrian. Gisborne, Dec. 5. News was received to-day from the Southern Cross petroleum works that the deflected pipes have been withdrawn. The bore is m good condition, and drilling is being continued previous to putting the pipes m again. During the stoppage a large quantity of oil accumulated at the bottom. ''■ , The first wool ship, the W. H, Wateon, sailed to-day, with 2200 bales. Dec. 4. The County Council elected to-day to give all the concessions m their power to parties willing to make a tramway or light railway to the quarries at Patutahi. Eevell, E.M., who is on the eve of his departure from the district, will be entertained at a banquet at Dawson's Hotel, to-night. i The first professional medical examination m connection with the Otago University was -held on Monday and Satur- ' day last, when Mr William Christie, of Warepa, passed the various examinations. Mr Christie is thus the first medical student who has passed a professional examination m this colony. Dr McDonald, the recently appointed mate'ria medica lecturer, has m consequence of Mr Christie's successful passing, commenced his lectures, the summer session opening on Monday last.
