Makino Butter Factory.

• The Factory buildings which belong to the Makino Butter and Cheese Factory Company are situated fronting the main road, two miles from Makino, railway siding;, and four miles from Fielding. The principle ' em-* ' ployed m making butter is the same: as that which hast been already fully explained m these columns, in connection with the Palmersipn Dairy Factory, and need not therefore be gone, into again. But m some of the details m general management, and m! the make and size of .some of the machinery, there are slight differences between the two Factories, which it may be interesting to notice. The separator used at Makiuo is one manufactured by the Aylesbury Dairy Co., London, and seems to work very well, indeed. Centrifugal force is made use of m this as m: all other separators, but its chief distinguishing feature lies m the cream and separated milk rising into their Several' chambers or cylinders, through cover-, ed channels, and then being earned away, instead of their being collected 1 by the short noses employed m the* Naskov patent, which latter method! must require very much more atcen-r, tiori. However, the Makino separator only turns out its 20. gallons per, hour, although the machine, makes 7000 revolutions per : minute, £ speed hardly to be credited, much leHSV imagined. The buildings » consist- of the main structure, measuring 22ft x 18ft; the engine; room, 22ft x 12ft ; and a wash house . and .workshop of: the same dimensions. There is. ai good landing stage fitted ;up to receive the milk cans, and to the right; of this stands the engine; Btraight r in front the general factory, and to tho r left, the wash house. ; The engine and boiler is a 3 h. p., vertical, and i* used purely tor power,- steam not being used for washing, or beating.as m other factoties. The finishing room is wisely made separate iiy partitions fioui the place where the rest of the operations are carried on, so that the chances of the butter beoom* ing tainted m any " way are redtfeot to a minimum. Here there is one of the usual machine butter- worker.-*, to ; work out the bntter-milk, etc., which ■is worked by hand, The, casks used for salting down and packing the but- ■ ter m, are all made on, the spot bjr the Company's managerjj ploys his spare time m this very useful way. The land comprises one acre, and at the back of \t stands the piggery, where there are already a good many pigs. These live entirely^ on the .separated milk, -and are ©$r« tain.ly not m bad condition, , Settler*, are allowed to take,, .this, separated milk away again at Id per sjal.,' bu^ the. Company will. probably retain the whole of , it next season, since it v ■ thought that it would pay them better to. rear pigs . with it than sell at that price. Settlers are paid 3£d.pe£ gal. for theiv milk,; and the notice board announces that payments are made every month. The churn js woi ked by steam, and ' is about the same size and make as those utied m Palmerston. The paddle is worked at the rate of, 150 revolutions per minute. Aboht 15 'settlers supply milk regularly, and, they usually manage tii run m about 160 gain, per day. No milk is 'received on Sundays. The capital of the Company is £1000 but. they have started operations without allotting the total number of shares, only about 600 having been placed. It has been the intention of the Directors to do everything on a small .scale to commence with, with* view to extending operations afteiswards, should the inducements be sufficient. This is an^xtremelj wise method to adopt,- Alveady it hag been found necessary to order another separator, and we trust that $he %wf<tes<<!s that He m store.for the. Uompsiuy will be such as will warrant ah increase m all the plant, and bring m gootl returns to those'- who nave embarked their capital m the enterprise.
